What is the currency in Malta? The currency is the Maltese Lira (Lm) which is divided into 100 Cents. 1 British pound = 0.60 Maltese Lira. Banks offer the best exchange rates. Malta’s electricity supply is 240V/50Hz and the plugs have 3 flat pins as in the UK. Is there a public transport system? Malta and Gozo offer good public transport with traditional local buses as well as taxis. Car rental is cheap on the islands and will save you a lot of time waiting at bus stops. It is important to note that cars drive on the left hand side of the road although they are right hand drive. Comino is very small and traffic free. What is the minimum age for diving in Malta? The PADI dive courses start at the age of 10. However, there are programmes for youngsters aged 8 or older conducted in the safe environment of a swimming pool. Are there any special requirements for diving in Malta? A Self-Assessment Medical Form has to be filled in and signed. If any medical condition that may restrict the diver/student from diving arises from this form, he/she will have a Medical Examination by a Doctor. A fee of Lm5 (approx.) will be charged for this service. If you are reasonably fit and have no breathing difficulties you should be able to pass this without any problems. Alternatively, divers can bring their own doctors certificate.
Do the Maltese people speak English? Nearly all the locals speak fluent English. Is the tap water safe to drink? Yes, but it does taste slightly bitter. Most people buy bottled water and use the tap water for cooking. Do I need a visa to visit Malta? Citizens of United Kingdom do not require a visa for stays up to 3 months. Passports must be valid for the duration of the stay. Do I need any health insurance? Malta is part of the E111 system which allows visitors on short-term stays to use the public health care sector on the same terms as a local resident and provides all covered visitors with emergency and necessary care. The E111 is now replaced by the EU Health Insurance Card. Please make sure your travel insurance covers Scuba Diving. Where is the best nightlife? All the best night clubs and bars can be found in Buggiba (St Paul’s Bay) and Paceville (St Julian’s). Most clubs and bars stay open until they are empty. What is there to do apart from diving? Apart from the sightseeing, there is a water park, a dolphinarium, sports and country club, all kinds of water sports, horse riding and weekly markets and festas. Where is the best place to snorkel? You can spot lots of life around most of the coastline but the top spots are: the Blue Lagoon and the caves around St Marija Bay on the island of Comino, the caves around Dwejra Point and along the west of Xwieni Bay near Marsalforn on Gozo. What should I wear when diving in Malta? From January - May (sea temp.15-18C) an 8mm Full suit or Dry suit is recommended. From June - October (sea temp.20-27C) a 3mm Shortie or 3mm Body suit is recommended. From November - December (sea temp. 16-20C) a 5mm Full suit is recommended.
